Facts & History
|
Opening Year
|
1994. Villas opened in 2000. |
| History |
Original plans for the Vacation Kingdom included a "Wilderness Hotel" to adjoin the campground. Twenty four years later the Wilderness Lodge rose out of the pine trees. Granite flagstone and lodgepole pines were transported in from the West to help build the Lodge. Hand hewn totems and Native American artifacts decorate the Lodge providing authenticity to the majestic building. Much of the forest that surrounds the Lodge is native Florida slash pine, but careful eyes will spot conifers that, previously, were only found out West. Ingenuity and Disney Magic help them thrive in Florida humidity. |

| Design |
Designed by Peter Dominick, a Denver architect, it is based on the historic wood-timber lodges of America's national parks. Dominick is known as an architect for his sensitivity to the rugged Western landscape. |
| Expansion |
In 2000 the Disney Vacation Club opened it's fifth property adjacent to the Wilderness Lodge. The Villas Building was designed to complement the Lodge, while not mimicking it. Intended to look like the lodges built to support the burgeoning transcontinental railroad that would take passengers to the great National Parks out west. Inside you'll even find the Iron Spike room - decorated with railroad memorabilia and even replicas from Walt Disney's very own Carolwood Pacific. |
| Christmastime |
Be sure not to miss the grand Christmas Tree in the center of the seven story atrium. Peter Dominick is a rather clever fellow - the very center section of flooring can be removed for access to electrical outlets for the express purpose of lighting a Christmas tree. The same thing is in his other two Disney resorts - Animal Kingdom Lodge and Grand Californian. Bears and other woodland critters frolic among the holly and Country themed decor. |
