The Hospital for Sick Kids in Toronto
~ Inspired by Dotti Saroufim of Boston, the Toronto Mickey SOS (Soap or Shampoo) for Children Project is being headed by Fairytale Dreams & Destinations ~
What is It?
The Mickey SOS for Children Project is a program that brings goodie bags filled with Mickey soaps and shampoos saved from Disney Resorts to patients of The Hospital for Sick Children. Our goal is that these goodie bags will bring a smile to the face of a child.
How Can I Help?
I am sending out a plea for people to send a bar of soap, a bottle of shampoo or a container of hand cream unused from their Disney trips to be donated to the children. We can use all of the Mickey character toiletries (soap, shampoo, body lotion, shower caps, etc.), but we also make up teenage girl bags with the toiletries from Disney Deluxe Level Properties and Disney Cruise Line.
Does it stop there?
Although toiletries are the basis of this project, ANY Disney token item will be accepted. We can use small notebooks, colorful pens, pencils, or anything else that would help a child pass the many long days in a hospital room. Children enjoy items that can be hung, like ornaments and key chains as they hang them from their IV poles as decoration. Disney Princess stickers, Disney markers, character pins and buttons; any or all of these items can be added to the bags to make a wonderful treat for the kids.
Unfortunately due to the children's dietary restrictions, the project can not accept candy or other food items. Also, balloons are a choking hazard and therefore can not be accepted, nor will any type of used toys because of the lowered immune system of most of these children and the chance of infection.
I have no soap to send, how else can I help?
If you are heading to Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line or Disneyland in the future, and won't use your toiletries for your stay, please collect them and send them to me upon your return.
Not heading to a Disney destination anytime soon, but still want to help? We could use volunteers to put together the goodie bags. If you are interested and live in the Bolton, Ontario area, please email me and I'll let you know when we will be having our next 'bagging party'. Although easy, it takes time to put these items together in a cellophane bag, tied with ribbons to match the toiletries.
